A Historic Journey
The story of Etobicoke began in the 1790s when it was first settled by European pioneers. Initially an agricultural district, it evolved into a thriving community.
In 1850, Etobicoke Township was officially incorporated, marking the beginning of its journey toward city status. The city experienced significant growth in the 20th century, especially after World War II. It expanded as several independent villages and towns merged to form Etobicoke, first in 1954 when Metropolitan Toronto was established and later in a 1967 consolidation.
In 1998, Etobicoke’s city status and government dissolved as it became an integral part of present-day Toronto. Despite this, Etobicoke retains its unique character and identity within the city.
A Diverse and Suburban Oasis
Etobicoke is known for its highly diverse population, which reached 365,143 in 2016. The district is a vibrant tapestry of cultures and backgrounds.
Etobicoke’s development is primarily suburban and characterized by spacious main streets, shopping malls, and cul-de-sac housing developments. It boasts a lower population density compared to other Toronto districts.
Connectivity and Education
Etobicoke is well-connected with several expressways, including Highways 427, 401, 409, the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), and Gardiner Expressway. It is also the western terminus of Line 2 Bloor-Danforth of the Toronto subway and is served by four suburban rail stations of GO Transit.
Etobicoke is home to Humber College, encompassing two campuses, one of which hosts the University of Guelph-Humber. It’s a hub of learning and growth within the district.
A Blend of Cultures and Traditions
Etobicoke’s diversity is on full display, with a significant portion of its population residing in North Etobicoke. This area is home to a melting pot of cultures, with residents hailing from India, Jamaica, Iraq, Guyana, Somalia, Ghana, the Philippines, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and more.
Central and South Etobicoke boasts a substantial European population, with roots in countries such as Italy, Poland, and Ukraine. It’s also home to some of Toronto’s most affluent neighborhoods, including The Kingsway.
